Reiki comes from two Japanese words. Rei, meaning "spirit" or "soul" and ki, meaning "energy." Reiki is the universal life force energy, much like prana or qi (chi) in Indian and Chinese cultures. It is the energy that sustains all life, vibrating through every living thing. Like yoga, reiki is not a religion and can be practiced or experienced by people from all faiths.
Reiki is a healing art that works at all levels - physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. Guided by the highest light and love, reiki healing tenscends time and space. This allows for distance healings and mending of residual emotional wounds formed years prior. Just as yoga is a union of mind, body and spirit, so is the goal of reiki to heal the whole individual.
The gift of reiki is passed down from teacher to student through the attunement process. With hands placed on or just above the body, a practitioner transmits this universal life force down through the crown chakra and out through the palms. Reiki is intelligent in that the energy flows to where it is needed.
A reiki practitioner does not do reiki, a reiki practitioner simply works as a vessel observing the flow of energy.
